Regular Use of Fluoride Supplements Can Help Counter Tooth Sensitivity

Posted .

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by several different things. Yet many of these cases involve some degree of tooth enamel erosion. This could be a primary or contributing factor caused by chronic poor oral hygiene, or a propensity for drinking acidic beverages.

Fortunately, the oral care specialists at Olson Dental Care will monitor the health of your teeth as part of the routine dental checkup. If a member of our staff notices a problem with the mineral density of your tooth enamel we might recommend administering a fluoride treatment.

In case of significant tooth enamel erosion, Dr. Mitchell Olson might also include a prescription for fluoride supplements. This is even more likely to be the case if you don’t have ready access to fluoridated water. These are available in several different forms including sublingual tabs, gels, mouth rinse, or a specially formulated toothpaste with higher levels of fluoride than retail strength brands.

Ingestible fluoride supplement will need to be taken as directed. With concentrated fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash, you should apply them your teeth right before going to bed, or at a time when you can easily abstain from eating or drinking. This will allow the fluoride to fully saturate your tooth enamel.
